Origin and Cultivation

„Der Urkaffee“ (“Primal Coffee”) originates in Ethiopia, the land on the Horn of Africa, also known as the “Cradle of Humanity”. According to scientific research, Ethiopia is also the original home of the coffee plant. The genetic ancestors of every coffee plant anywhere in the world came from Ethiopia.

Coffee plants in Ethiopia are, however, not cultivated in plantations, but grow wild and free in the rainforest, mainly in the Kaffa area in the south-western part of the country. The environmental conditions on the gently rolling hills at an altitude of between 1 300 and 2 100 metres are perfect for coffee. The temperature never drops below freezing, the soil is slightly acidic, and the rainfall is just right, allowing the coffee shrubs to grow to a height of several meters in the rainforest undergrowth.

The “Coffea arabica” beans that grow in this fertile corner of the world belong to the noblest and rarest of coffees. The natural rainforest habitat of the wild-growing „Coffea arabica“ is currently restricted to only about 2 000 square Kilometres because of ongoing deforestation (see Ecology Seal), and is therefore inestimably valuable to biologists and coffee connoisseurs alike. Each individual cup of „Urkaffee“ is a pleasure most precious.
